🇬🇧🌊 key insight

A solid choice for UK nurses who prefer the Pacific Coast lifestyle. BCCNM is efficient and UK credentials are highly regarded. Language exemption likely applies.

✓ Tip: Many UK nurses settle in the Okanagan region (Kelowna area) — good quality of life, lower cost of living than Metro Vancouver, strong nurse demand.

BCCNM rating for IENs:GoodFaster than Ontario. Strong labour market demand. High cost of living is a factor, especially in Metro Vancouver. Fraser Valley and interior BC are more affordable.

The 6-Step Process: United KingdomBritish Columbia RN Registration

01

Apply to NNAS

1–2 weeks (your application)

Create your account at nnas.ca and submit your NNAS application. Select British Columbia (BCCNM) as your destination college. Pay the NNAS application fee ($650–750 CAD). NNAS generates a document checklist specific to United Kingdom.

02

Document Collection from United Kingdom

3–5 months total

NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council) in the UK is digital and fast — verification typically arrives at NNAS within 2–4 weeks. UK institutions also respond quickly. Your NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council) and your nursing school must send documents directly to NNAS — you cannot submit them yourself. For UK nurses, the main delay is simply NNAS administrative processing and choosing the right province.

03

NNAS Credential Assessment Report

4–8 weeks (after all docs received)

Once NNAS confirms all documents are received, they assign an assessor who produces your Credential Assessment Report (CAR). Your CAR is sent directly to BCCNM. Review it carefully for errors before your provincial application begins.

04

BCCNM Application & Assessment

4–7 months

BCCNM (BC College of Nurses and Midwives) reviews your CAR and sends you a registration invitation. Submit your BCCNM application and pay the fee (~$400 CAD). BCCNM improved their IEN processing significantly since 2023. Applications are tracked online. Language exemptions may apply for UK/US/Australian-trained nurses. Bridging risk for UK-trained nurses: Very Low. UK nursing education is highly regarded by Canadian provincial colleges. Bridging is rarely required. CNO and CARNA both recognize UK credentials well.

05

Language Testing — IELTS Academic or CELBAN

Runs in parallel — start immediately

British Columbia (BCCNM) requirements: IELTS Academic — L 7.0 / R 6.5 / W 7.0 / S 7.0 (Academic), overall 7.0. CELBAN alternative: L 8 / R 6 / W 7 / S 8. UK-trained nurses are typically exempt from IELTS/CELBAN requirements or meet them easily. Confirm exemption criteria with your target provincial college. Start language prep during your NNAS application phase — not after NNAS completes. Nurses who wait add 3–6 months unnecessarily.

06

NCLEX-RN Examination

2–3 months to prepare and pass

Required — NCLEX-RN via Pearson VUE. After BCCNM confirms your registration eligibility, you receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) from Pearson VUE. UK nursing is strong in clinical reasoning. NCLEX preparation is still recommended (2–3 months) due to North American-specific content differences. Allow 2–3 months of dedicated preparation. After passing, BCCNM grants full RN registration within 2–4 weeks.

Immigration Pathway — United Kingdom Nurses to British Columbia

BC PNP (BC Provincial Nominee Program)

BC PNP Health Authority stream. Requires a job offer from a BC Health Authority. BC also participates in federal express entry streams.

Important: Immigration and nursing registration are parallel processes — you do not need PR or a Canadian work permit to begin NNAS. Start both streams simultaneously for the shortest overall timeline.

What UK-trained Nurses Applying to British Columbia Get Wrong

Not claiming the language testing exemption — UK nurses who trained and practiced in English often qualify at CARNA and BCCNM, saving months and $330+.
Choosing Ontario when Alberta or Saskatchewan is 4–6 months faster — UK nurses have the strongest credential profile in Canada. Use that advantage to choose the fastest province.
Assuming NCLEX is straightforward because your clinical training is strong — North American medication trade names, triage protocols, and scope of practice differ enough to warrant 2 focused months of prep.
Not using NMC's online verification system — it's among the fastest in the world. Most UK nurses don't realize their NNAS document phase can complete in 2–4 weeks.
Delaying the decision on which province — UK nurses clear NNAS in 3–5 months. Indecision on province costs more time than any other single factor for this group.
